Telling It Like It Is A recent Boston Globe column by Kathleen Schuckel, Educator says blacks underachieve, caught my eye because of a reference to "Washington Township." When I read the column, it turned out that, sure enough, you had to go to the Boston Globe to read about a school district on the north side of Indianapolis. My interest was caught, as I taught my first ten years in that district. The column tells of MSDWT (Metropolitan School District of Washington Township) Superintendent Eugene White conducting a convocation at North Central high school last fall with black male students and telling them, "Right now, you're putting too many things ahead of education." The column goes on to tell how White backed up his words with "access to free tutoring, extra study assistance for Advanced Placement courses, and mentoring from black professionals." Needless to say, White took some serious flak for his actions, but also mobilized some serious community support for his students. And guess what...test scores improved! Info-Mac News Adam C. Engst writes about recent improvements to the Info-Mac Archive and Network in Info-Mac Archive Mirror Network Improved. Engst, the president of the service and publisher of the long-running TidBits newsletter, writes that file size limits have been lifted at Info-Mac with the addition of some new hardware. He also notes that Info-Mac is now asking for donations from developers who post their work for download on Info-Mac. Before there were sites such as Version Tracker, MacUpdate, and Tucows, Info-Mac was THE place to go to find macintosh sharewares and freewares. Rather than just a links page, it is a true repository and archive of files. Send feedback to Caught a Bug I caught a viral and bacterial bug at the end of last week that put me down for the entire week this week. I hope to be back to full strength and resume updates by Monday. |
