Red blood cell puzzleNew Online Science Puzzles

While doing a presentation this week, I discovered that the CELLS ALIVE! puzzle index has been updated since my last posting about it. Jigsaw puzzles for Red Blood Cells, Streptococcus, and Napthalene join the previous Animal Cell and Plant Cell puzzles. Several science crosswords have been added as well.

Election Results Good for Education?

Both eSchool News and the National Education Association (NEA) have posted columns today suggesting the election results from Tuesday may pave the way for improvements in education. Dems' victory could be good for schools suggests positive changes may be possible in college loan interest, workforce preparedness, funding for educational technology, and the reauthorization of the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). The NEA's Friends of Public Education Elected in Key States notes the election of pro-public education governors and members of Congress in key states.

Ad Problems

Things may look a bit different or even bare to regular readers of Educators' News. A problem with one of our ad agencies developed this week (not the one immediately below), and I've had to pull all of their stuff pending resolution of the problem.

MyAppleMenuNew And Improved on MyAppleMenu

Heng-Cheong Leong's MyAppleMenu (formerly AppleSurf) has been one of my favorite Mac link sites for some time. Recently, Heng-Cheong has added a section called New And Improved that covers interesting software available. Many of the items are either shareware and freeware, something I gave up regularly reviewing on Educators" News years ago. The unimposing addition to MyAppleMenu makes the already excellent site an even better daily visit.

Something that's been around a bit longer that may go unnoticed in a casual browsing of the site is the excellent collection of photos used on the top banner of MyAppleMenu. Be sure to check out the Photo Album when you visit the site.

And...so the good folks at MacSurfer's Headline News won't get their noses out of joint, it's still the granddaddy of Mac link sites.

Banning Tag

Los Angeles Times staff writer Janet Cromley takes a look at the reasons school administrators have banning the age-old playground favorite of tag in Tag, you're out! Cromley writes:

But the reality is that schools across the United States have been quietly discouraging tag for years. Any discussion of it elicits a flinch response because this simple schoolyard game is at the nexus of three competing interests: giving kids freedom to play (what many teachers and kids want), keeping them safe from harm on large, unruly playgrounds (what concerned parents want) and avoiding band-aid-related depositions (what all administrators want).

In this time of high-stakes testing, Tag, you're out is an interesting and relaxing read.
