Homelessness

Robert King continues his insightful series about schools in the Indy Star with Homelessness just adds to IPS' challenges. King tells of a displaced family now living out of a motel room, but still getting their kids to school with "clean clothes, clean faces and combed hair."

Lunar Eclipse Tonight (if it's clear...and you stay up late)

If you're fortunate enough to have clear skies tonight, a total lunar eclipse will begin on the west coast around 9:30 P.M. (PST) Monday evening. For those of us east of the Mississippi, the eclipse begins a bit after midnight Tuesday morning. Space.com notes that eclipse watchers may be treated to a few shooting stars as well, as the eclipse will occur during the Ursids meteor shower, a minor meteor shower that is often obscured by the brightness of the moon.

Odds 'n' Ends

Kenneth Mitchell has an excellent satire about using student test scores to evaluate teachers on Education Week in Taking Teacher Evaluation to Extremes. Unfortunately, you have to be a subscriber to read the whole thing.

On the brighter side, When buying toys for children with disabilities, let interests be your guide by Mara Rose Williams on the Kansas City Star is a free and excellent read, but may be a bit too late for Christmas shoppers this year.

And in case someone noticed, I've gone to a Monday-Wednesday-Friday publication schedule for Educators' News this month. As things in education slow down over the holidays, I might just blow off the rest of the month!

Merry Christmas

And the angel said unto them, Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.

Luke 2:10-11 (ASV)

The image above is a "scene from a life size nativity at the Luxembourg Christmas market." It was taken in 2006 by graphic artist Debbie Schiel who lives in Far North Queensland, Australia, and shared on the royalty-free stock.xchng site. The scripture was copied from my installation of the free, Macintosh Online Bible. There's also free version for Windows users.

Best wishes from Annie and I to you for a joyous and fulfilling holiday season.
