In a day when the news will most appropriately be dominated by stories of the protests in Egypt and the massive winter storm sweeping across the central United States, it would be easy to miss Trip Gabriel and Sam Dillon's excellent article, G.O.P. Governors Take Aim at Teacher Tenure. The title pretty well tells the story other than a dandy quote from Michael Petrilli, an education official under President George W. Bush, "These new Republican governors are all trying to outreform one another."

It's been quite a week here. We missed the heavy snow but got ice instead that caused a 35 hour power outage. Annie and I felt like we were pioneers. Rather than dwell on that, I did get a nice shot of the creek that is just down the road from us.

Frozen Creek

Diane Ravitch and Walt Gardner both have blog posts worth a look this week. Diane writes in The President's Speech:

...with the ascendancy of governors who share the Obama administration's desire to cut the power of teachers' unions and to remove job rights for teachers, who will advocate for education in the state legislatures when they start slashing education budgets?

Walt tells of some splinter groups in Split in Teachers Unions Threatens Solidarity, writing:

What they [teachers] don't understand, however, is that without union protection, the most highly paid or the most outspoken among them will be those most vulnerable.
