Mayor Bloomberg New York School Chief? Richard Rothstein's Lessons column this week explores mayoral control of New York schools. Mr. Mayor, Schools Chief. Mr. Fix-It Is Another Story is an interesting read both from the historical references presented and Mr. Rothstein's take on New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's desire to return New York schools to mayoral control. Devotion For April 21-27, 2002 Zach Wood's weekly devotional for this week is Fuel the Desire. I hope it adds a bit of brightness to your week. Zach also maintains an archive of previous devotionals. Short Posting Today's edition of Educators' News is a bit brief. There's just not much going on right now that I can find. Of course, I'm logging on via my backup 28.8 modem between thunderstorms here in central Indiana, which limits my online time. I fried the 56K modem a couple of weeks ago.

New Items on SchwabLearning.org New items on the Schwablearning.org site this week include: Microsoft Antitrust Case Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates testified for parts of three days in the remedy phase of the Microsoft Antitrust trial. CNET's Joe Wilcox, who has provided excellent coverage and commentary throughout the trial, says "Gates clearly dominated the courtroom during his three days on the witness stand," but "states' attorney Steven Kuney...used his cross-examination of Gates to put forth alternatives to the proposed remedy that could be drawn on by U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly when she drafts her eventual court-ordered remedy."
Report Card Day for Nation's Schools AP writer Greg Toppo says in a recent posting, "When the school year begins this fall, 3,000 to 5,000 schools nationwide probably will be declared "failing" by states." See: Up to 5,000 schools expected to get F's Mac Lab Report Jeff Adkins Mac Lab Report for this week gives science teachers some good hardware/software tips in A 3 Millisecond Lab Report.
