MAMP

If you've ever thought you might want to just play around a bit with one of the many, excellent open source content management systems available, but configuring apache, php, and MySQL was just too much trouble, there's now a very cool way to do so now without having to do any configuration. MAMP, standing for Macintosh, Apache, Mysql and PHP, "installs a local server environment in a matter of seconds on your Mac OS X computer." Do note that the MAMP site clearly states "MAMP was created primarily as a PHP development environment for Macintosh computer and should therefore not be used as Live Webserver for the Internet."

Of course, I didn't notice the MAMP version download on the Moodle site until after I'd spent hours configuring my old server and installing Moodle 1.5, and later totally screwing up my installation when trying to upgrade to Moodle 1.7 (by applying a security patch which Moodle tells you in its documentation may trash your installation). So after two nights of playing with the server and really learning a lot of cool stuff, I noticed that Moodle lists a complete install download for Mac OS X (at the very bottom of the download page). It said that it included Moodle 1.7, the apache server, php, and MySQL. This package does just what it says. It's a drag and drop install with no configuration. You just launch it and use it!

To do a regular install of Moodle (and its required components), see:
Step-by-step Guide for Installing Moodle on Mac OS X 10.4 Client.
