FREE (Federal Resources for Educational Excellence)

The Federal Resources for Educational Excellence (FREE) site has received a facelift to make finding teaching resources easier. FREE carries over 1500 teaching and learning resources available from the federal government.

When looking for resource links pages, be sure to visit PRISM and its Other Resource Sites page.

Help PBS Choose a New Science Series

A posting on The Unofficial Apple Weblog notes that PBS has made available three science series pilots for free on iTunes (and other places) and will let the viewers choose which one will make it into a full fledged series. Wired Science, Science Investigators, and 22nd Century are the candidates.

iPhone and Apple TV Announced

Apple CEO Steve Jobs launched the Apple TV today in his Macworld Expo keynote speech. The device that will stream movies from your computer to your television was previously announced and is now available. The big announcement of the keynote was the much anticipated iPhone. While not shipping until next June, it appears to be a sure winner. The iPhone will provide capabilities as a cell phone, iPod, PDA, and more. Take a peek at John Markoff's New Mobile Phone Signals Apple’s Ambition for a good description.

Comet McNaught

Comet McNaught may be one of the brightest comets in recent memory. Discovered just last August by Australian astronomer Robert McNaught, C/2006 P1 (official name) may grow to be brighter than Venus in the early morning and early evening skies. Some great pictures are already available for viewing online. So here's the pertinent links:

American Stars of Teaching

Nominations are now open for the U.S. Department of Education American Stars of Teaching awards. The project "recognizes exemplary teachers who raise student achievement, use innovative classroom strategies and make a difference in their students' lives." One candidate per state and the District of Columbia will be selected and announced next fall. Nominations are open until mid-April.

Award Winning Teacher Moves to Tough School

The Christian Science Monitor's Gigi Douban tells the inspiring story of 2003 National Teacher of the Year Betsy Rogers moving to a "failing school" and helping to improve it. In When a Teacher of the Year takes on a failing school, Douban tells "the story of how Ms. Rogers and her colleagues are trying to turn around one of America's most challenged schools." If you've had a rotten day, read this one. It should make you feel better: -).

More iPhone

I like good writing. I linked yesterday to an excellent New York Times column about the Apple's new iPhone. But today, David Pogue gives an incredible description of the iPhone in Apple Waves Its Wand, Again. Of course, not all is perfect in the land of Apple. Beyond lingering worries about stock options backdating, see Cisco files infringement suit against Apple over iPhone and Apple Fails to Reinvent Telecommunications Industry – Too Bad.
